The winter weather still gripping the country meant I couldn’t handle much painting out of doors but was eager to do Manchester justice so was on the hunt for suitable indoor subject matter. The kind staff at the ‘MOSI’ – the Museum of Science and Industry, agreed access, and I was able to paint this spectacular view inside the Air & Space Hall. This was a truly magical space to spend some time, particularly thanks to the wonderful volunteers, who gave me an education on aviation history, showed behind-the-scenes peeks at replica models they were building and an unforgettable tour of the 1951 Avro Shackleton bomber they had recently re-wired. These retirees reminded me of the character in the Disney Pixar film ‘UP’ and I could imagine them, when the world gets too rough, sparking up the Shackleton for one last flight after they’ve secretly got it in working order!
