Manchester in Transit

By Rob Pointon

I painted this where the trains disappear and appear out of the tunnels underneath Piccadilly Station like giant worms in and out of holes. I sketched the view and then re-sketched simplifying the elements into more abstract movement related shapes before beginning work on the final canvas. We have a convex tram on the left travelling away from us and a concave tram on the right moving towards us.
This anti-impressionistic approach of distilling clean edges and flat planes of colour can allow some quite complex montages of elements that could not exist together at the same time, because the image is now ‘cleaner’ we seem to be able to digest the double decker and car sliding trough the paths of the trams.
