Oculus, Museum of Islamic Art Atrium

By Rob Pointon

The spectacular atrium of the Museum of Islamic Art is crowned with an Oculus inside a dome. The magnificent space designed by famed architect I.M.Pei (designer of the Louvre Pyramid and Bank of China Tower in Hong Kong) is a wondrous experience and just setting for a collection of some of the finest Islamic Art.
The challenge with this subject was how to communicate the feeling of beauty created by clean lines and geometric complexities whilst maintaining a painterly approach that is a direct response and not too structured.
