Pier 39, San Francisco

By Rob Pointon

Pier 39, San Francisco

This spot immediately drew my attention: a colourful crowd walking along a popular pier boardwalk with an iconic San Franciscan skyline behind. The view looking down on a sunlit crowd made me think of Claude Monet’s La Rue Montorgueil, and how he tackled the challenge of a moving mass of people with combinations of coloured brush strokes.

The composition tilt has been introduced to keep the viewer’s attention on the flow of the crowd down the pier and reduce the impact on a potentially dull roof directly below my vantage point. The piano staircase on the left of the pier reacted something like a real piano, which was a novelty – for the first couple of hours.
