Workers waiting in the shade

By Rob Pointon

The rapid expansion and construction of Doha has attracted a migrant workforce from across South Asia. Only 12% of Qatar’s population are Qatari nationals, the rest is a diverse mix of nationalities including 24% Indian, and 17% Nepalese.

This scene shows mostly Pakistani and Bangladeshi labourers waiting to be picked up for work.

The play of sun and shade and human life moving with the shade drew me to this subject. I also wanted a painting that showed the everyday street life with a backdrop of modern traffic and construction.
